July 17, 1863 - Federal troops under Gen. Blunt attack a mixed force of Texas and Indian troops at Honey Springs, Ark. Many of the 5,000 southern troops are weaponless and US troops outflank them. Indians delay the Federal advance and cover the retreat back to the Indian Territory. There will be more fighting in the Territory but desertions among the Texas troops are high and eventually only the outnumbered Indians will remain.
