July 17, 2013 Press Statement by MCA President Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek on the public university intake The MCA urges the Government to admit all top scorers with CGPA 4.0 into public universities (IPTAs) without further delay as they have rightly obtained the perfect cumulative grade point average. This is in line with the agenda of grooming our own talent locally to cater to the development and progress of the country towards a high income nation by 2020. We understand that there has been a high demand for popular courses such as medicine and pharmacy and that the IPTAs will not be able to accept all top scorers due to limited places. In such cases, the deserving students should be offered places in private universities (IPTS) via scholarships provided by the government. Since the government has stopped awarding scholarships to SPM graduates unless they are accepted into reputable university, the government can now have the means to provide scholarships to students who obtained CGPA of 4.0 in their STPM examination. Each deserving student must be assured of a place in university and they should not be turned away unless they don’t have the required entry points. MCA stands firm that the government should provide tertiary education for all based on meritocracy and students with CGPA 4.0 should not be denied entry into IPTAs I would like to remind students who obtained a CGPA of 4.0 that they could also opt for other courses of their choice and not merely popular courses such as that for medicine and pharmacy. Students should have the passion, interest and commitment when they pursue these courses so that they can fully realise their goals. I have conveyed this issue and the grievances of the students at large to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for further action. ENDS
