July 17, 2014 Mr. James Guthre Dear Mr. Guthre, Thank you for contacting me about funding for research into lupus. It is always good to hear from a fellow Marylander like you and I thank you for being in touch about this important matter. As you know, lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your immune system attacks your own organs. Despite the nature of the disease, research into lupus has not kept pace with research into other illnesses. As you mention in your letter, of particular concern is the high prevalence of lupus among women, especially women of color. Please be assured that I understand the severity of lupus and fully support funding for research into this tragic disease. I appreciate you sharing with me your funding priority for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Like you, I support robust funding for NIH and recently joined my colleagues in Congress in sending a letter to the House Appropriations Committee requesting $32 billion for NIH for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015. At a time when NIH and its affiliated institutes are embarking on new and emerging scientific opportunities, it is vital that we equip the agency with the resources they need to continue this research. Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me, James. I hope you will continue to stay in close touch, so that I might benefit from your thoughts and perspective. For more information about my work for the 4th Congressional District of Maryland or to subscribe to periodic e-mail updates on legislative issues, please visit my website at donnaedwards.house.gov/. Sincerely, Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards Member of Congress
