July 18 and 19, New Bedford will be hosting the The North Atlantic Shark Tournament. This is the same weekend as the Newport Monster Shark Tournament. Personally, I do not like the idea of a giant tournament attempting to catch a threatened population, especially considering that the chumming and baiting can eventually lead sharks closer to shore--some of which could be large and threatening to beach-goers. I prefer support of conservation and education of the ocean and its inhabitants. I dont really see the economic benefit to this area either. The one in MV used to be a hub for illegal gambling and public drunkenness, so much so in fact that it was shut down and moved to Newport. Even if you are a supporter of the tournament, what sense does it make to hold it on the same weekend as a larger, more popular tournament? Im just curious what the general consensus about this tournament is. What do you think?
