July 21, 2013 – Day 61 Today was the fiftieth day of riding. We rode from Accident, MD to Spring Gap Campground on the C & O Canal Trail. We went 58.5 miles with a 2943 elevation gain. The average temperature was 80.2oF (without wind). Today, we got a late start due to the fact that Dad went and got everyone biscuits. I got to tag along. I think we all enjoyed the biscuits. The first half of the day you could tell we were in the mountains. Every “hill” we climbed had an elevation and mountain at the end of the name. It was interesting! We went downhill for the other half of the day. In Frostburg, we jumped onto the Great Allegany Passage. We stopped and had a break and looked at the old steam engine train. We moved right along the second half of the day. As Rick put it, the Great Allegany Passage was an interstate. Nice packed gravel turning into pavement a few miles before Cumberland. We stopped and had lunch in Cumberland before riding a few more miles. In Cumberland, we got on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail (C & O Canal Trail). It was nice but not as nice as the Great Allegany Passage. A few miles before camp, it started to pour. The trail had massive mud puddles that we had to ride through. Rick and I were both mud splattered. The bikes were covered in mud. And guess what? … The campground was primitive meaning no showers and no flushing toilets. We had the option of jumping in the Potomac River or using the hand pump well water. I voted the hand pump well water. (Rick made that decision too.) It was pretty funny taking a shower in dirty bike clothes at the water pump. The upside was that it got most of the mud off the jersey. Off to set up the tent before it starts raining again …
