July 22, 2013 They went expecting one thing and found another. For us it would have been a day that ‘felt like Monday.’ For them it was a workday, ‘first day of the week’ and things had not gone well. In fact, everything was so bad, that these folks, going to do a decent thing. had lost all hope. Things were bad--final. And then! When they got to the place, the big door had been pushed open, and the area where they were to offer their services, was empty. No body. No dead Rabbi. No dead Lord of Life. Of course they ran… It’ll be early this day, a Monday, when we roll out of bed, shave (no shaving in the ‘Desert Sand-Baby’s Bottom’ area), do teeth, and hit the shower. Days have personalities. Some are slow days---had one yesterday. Lord! It took days! No particular reason. That was its personality. Today is a “Wonder how this is going to go” day. What would you call that---anticipation day? It’s supposed to be the last of the eight-chemo sessions, Oh! That would be nice. But our wonderful Helen did say something like “You know Dr. Young wants to see you next Tuesday, don’t you?” Probably just to check us up, but could it also include talk about---do you ever ‘project ‘on days? The Bible makes a big deal about days. Especially the one called Sabbath. God made it an ‘R and R’ day. Check it out. Work six. Rest one. The Old Testament reports that God took this day seriously. There are passages that actually say if one works on that day, they should be killed. * The best interp I can come up with at that point is that if you don’t rest and recreate, you’re going to die anyway---worn out and tired. In my personal experience, each day of the week has a unique and particular ‘feel.’ “Thank God it’s Friday,” “Looking forward to the week-end,” and so on. And Sundays with honest worship and decent fellowship can offer inner rest and re-creation in very real ways. Since today is the only one we’ve got, maybe we should have a little prayer like: “This is the day that you’ve made for us Lord. Help us enter it expecting something good and glorious---even new life.” “Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all who live away…” That’s fact. Faith can take truth, baptize it with living, and make each day a witness to resurrection. Do you remember as a child how long summer lasted? A lesson learned from that is this: “It’s by content rather than by duration…by quality not quantity” that blessed and sacred days are understood. Today is gift. We can ‘bear’ it, or rejoice and be glad in it. The quality of today would be greatly enhanced if the way we used today caused someone else to ‘rejoice and be glad.’ The ‘electronic embrace’ we share in these get togethers lays foundations for unique and special kinds of relationships. This was ‘unknown territory’ to this kid from The City (New Orleans), who came down with a bad illness, had to walk away from much loved work with much loved people, and walked into places where I thought I knew what to expect, and found much more. You have been kind. WellsFolk have been kind. Folks never known before have been kind. Bless-thanks! This is chemo Monday, but we’re going to name it You Never Know What To Expect day. Those ladies, long ago, went toward the cemetery ready for one thing and found another. A CA diagnosis, and then come toward the last treatments, and today. Thanks be unto God. Always love, always, Keith *Exodus 32; 14-15
