July 24, 2014 - Organic farming works in harmony with nature rather than against it. It involves much more than choosing not to use synthetic petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics and growth hormones. Rather, it is a holistic system that sees to the health and balance within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. DSWD Haven for the Elderly, with its friends from Men at Work, takes the next step towards greenifying the Center. From the breaking of the soil, acquisition of organic matter, preparation of the microbial inoculants (in this case EM or Effective Microorganisms), up to the preparation of the soil beds for eventual planting of crops, Men at Work is with the Center all the way. And with the continuous training of staff, Haven for the Elderly will soon be producing its own organic fruits and vegetables. Resource person Mr. Jimwell Gabuna says, the majority of the cost of organic farming comes from the intensive labor that goes into the process. But, he continues, the results are ultimately profitable, personally rewarding, and good for the environment. After 21 days the organic matter would have been absorbed by the soil and the population of good microorganisms grown high enough to be beneficial to planted crops. Meanwhile, Center Manager Mr. Ricky Bunao meets with Ms. Haydee Dinglasa, OIC of neighboring National Training School for Boys to discuss which lands the Center can use and the sharing of experience from their own venture into organic production. In a few months time, and a lot of elbow grease, the lolos and lolas of Haven for the Elderly will be enjoying organic produce for a longer and healthier life!
