July 31, 2013 NAPO WASHINGTON REPORT FLASH James Comey Confirmed as FBI Director On July 29, 2013, James Comey was confirmed as the seventh Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by a vote of 93-1 in the Senate. NAPO is very excited about Mr. Comey’s confirmation, as we have publically supported Mr. Comey since the nomination process began. We look forward to the opportunity to work with Mr. Comey in the future. Mr. Comey is a former deputy attorney general in the Justice Department under President George W. Bush. He has received bipartisan praise for his performance in that role, especially for confronting the White House over a domestic surveillance program that he considered outside the law. Moreover, Mr. Comey is one of our nation’s most skilled and respected national security and law enforcement professionals. Throughout his career, Mr. Comey has demonstrated that he is exceptionally qualified to handle the full range of challenges faced by today’s FBI. Mr. Comey has been a dedicated career public servant, and has continually evidenced his integrity, strong judgment, and commitment to the law enforcement mission. The following includes Attorney General Holder’s statement on the Senate vote to confirm Mr. Comey as the FBI Director: “Jim Comey is a dedicated public servant who brings an impeccable sense of judgment, a commitment to innovative methods and tools, and a lifetime of experience to a role that is critical to the protection of our nation and its citizens. I’ve known Jim for almost 20 years – and I have every confidence that, as he assumes leadership of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he will continue to uphold the standards of excellence and integrity that the FBI’s outgoing Director, Bob Mueller, helped to establish. As a seasoned prosecutor, a proven leader, and a faithful servant of the American people, I am confident that Jim will be a superb FBI Director. I applaud the U.S. Senate for approving his nomination. And I look forward to working with him – and with all of the brave men and women who serve the FBI – to continue protecting the American people, ensuring our nation’s security, and promoting the rule of law while upholding our most treasured values.” If you have any questions about this confirmation, please contact Melissa Nee at: [email protected].
