Jun 07 2013 More To This Story Than Partisanship Mike Huckabee Tuesday’s Congressional testimony by groups targeted by the IRS was infuriating. And so has been some of the reaction. Representatives of six conservative and Tea Party groups testified about the way the IRS put them through the wringer for up to two years or more, holding up their tax-exempt approval, which dried up donations and destroyed their ability to take part in the 2012 elections. The chairman of the National Organization for Marriage said he would “prosecute those responsible.” But we’re already seeing the latest tactic to try to dismiss it. Washington Rep. Jim McDermott took it for a trial run by suggesting to the witnesses’ faces that the IRS was just doing its job in scrutinizing tax-exempt groups like theirs, to make sure they weren’t engaged in political activity, so it wasn’t partisan. Well, that dog won’t hunt. For three reasons: first, the IRS held up nothing but conservative groups while not only approving, but in some cases expediting, applications by liberal and “progressive” groups. Secondly, the IRS already ADMITTED targeting conservatives, so it’s a bit late to deny it now. But most importantly, most honest liberals realize what the IRS was doing was more than an inconvenience. It was a state-enforced assault on these groups basic constitutional right to participate in a free election. If it’s tolerated against any group, then what’s to stop it happening to their opponents when power changes hands? This story isn’t a passing partisan blip. It’s something that everyone – right, left and center – should be howling over. To receive my 100% FREE commentary newsletter sign up here.
