June 10, 2014: Schools Calypso Competition 2014 hailed a success by the media Students from the schools located in Gros Islet emerged as monarchs in the Primary and Secondary School Calypso Competition 2014, held last Friday 6th June 2014 at the Mindoo Phillip Park. The show was hosted by the Saint Lucia Calypso Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour. Michael Mighty J Joseph, of the Gros Islet Primary School won the Primary School Division with a total of 355 points while Brendan Mighty Sizzler Philgence, of the RC Boys Primary School placed second with a total of 324 points. Harmony Ti Chantwel Williams of the Ave Maria School placed 3rd with a total of 306 points. Nikile Lil Nik Deterville of the Corinth Secondary School retained the title as the Secondary School Monarch 2014. Giovani Saltibus of the St Mary’s College placed 2nd, with 331 points while Nikla Gonzague of the Vide Bouteille Secondary placed 3rd with a total of 306 points. It is the third consecutive win for the Corinth Secondary School in this competition. A relieved Jason Bachelor Joseph former National Calypso Monarch praised the St Lucia Calypso Association for saving the competition and was very pleased with the standard of the performances of the students. He also thanked all the persons who came forward to assist. “The efforts of planning and preparation would have been lost,” he said. Chairman of the Association wishes to thank all persons, sponsors, and committee members who in one way or the other helped plan and produce the Competition, and advocates that the collaboration started with the Ministry and it should continue in the future. The Chief Education Officer, Marcus Edward and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Creative Industries, Donavan Williams and LUCELEC representative, Bernard Charles distributed the Prizes to the winners. Meanwhile a special meeting of the General Meeting of the Association is scheduled for Wednesday, 11th June 2014 at 5.00 pm, at the National Cultural Centre.
