June 25th 2012 at approximately 3 pm the US Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to sentence a juvenile to a mandatory sentence of life without parole. Ruling that sentencing a juvenile to lwop is against the 8th amendment, cruel and unusual punishment. If mandatory life sentences are considered unconstitutionally cruel, then fairness requires states to right the wrongs of the past. Timing when a person was born, nor the state in which the crime was committed, should not dictate whether a constitutional standard applies. If Im not mistaken the constitution was signed on Sept. 17th 1787, not June 25th 2012! My opinion the US Supreme Court should rule in favor of retroactivity, and in our case, Virginia needs to bring parole back and give these now men and woman a chance to prove they have rehibilitated and matured through their years of incarceration. Give them a chance to show their accomplishments and growth while incarcerated. Everyone makes mistakes in life but that doesnt mean they have to pay for them the rest of their life. Sometimes good people make bad choices. It doesnt mean their bad, it means their human!! No child is born bad! #retroactivity #secondchances #fairness
