June 5, 2013 Card of the Day The Five of Pentacles Card for June: The Nine of Pentacles The road to unreasonable happiness will often have some rough patches fellow Fools, as evidenced by both today’s Five of Pentacles and Monday’s Four of Wands. Fortunately, we’ve got the Nine of Pentacles this month to help navigate them! One of the most difficult of those rough patches to navigate is a feeling of impoverishment, or “never having enough,” so to speak. One wants to pursue a goal, but how to go about that when food needs to be put on the table and bills need to be paid? No, we think, there will be time to pursue activities that make me happy once the unpleasant-yet-mandatory is out of the way. So we focus exclusively on it, allowing our shelved goals to sit around gathering dust while we iron out wrinkle after wrinkle on a bed sheet we don’t really want to sleep on. As the frustration grows, often we will end up in the situation of the two youths depicted in today’s card: downcast, injured, impoverished, and with no way out of the doldrums that we can see. While it’s true that everyone has to suck it up and deal with unpleasantness from time to time, we have to remember where the focus must rest for us: maintaining the contentment this month’s Nine of Pentacles speaks of. The two downcast youths in the Five of Pentacles need only look up to the church window above them, behind which is the warmth and comfort they need to weather the storm. After that, it’s only a matter of finding the church door and walking in. In short fellow Fools, we all need to walk through some rough and dark patches, as the youths trapped in the snowstorm are, but focusing on the cold keeps us stuck out in it. Give only the portion of your attention required to complete an unpleasant task, while the overall focus remains on the eventual goal, the finish line that is unreasonable happiness. It’s tough to split one’s attention, sure, but with that skill mastered we will never find ourselves trapped in the storm!
