June 8, 1967 Israeli Defense Forces attacked USS Liberty on the high seas killing 34 Americans and wounding another 174. USS Saratoga & USS America launched aircraft to support Liberty but they were recalled by direct orders from Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. Congress has never investigated this attack and the official stories on both side stink to high heaven. the entire story was well told by an officer who was on Liberty at the time called Assault of the Liberty If you dont have the time to read it, watch this video. Marine SSgt Bryce Lockwood was there and tells the story of a ruthless and relentless attack. Of motor torpedo boats machine gunning life rafts and raking the decks with machine gun fire well after the ship was dead in the water and unable to return fire.
