Juror’s Statement: A rather odd and in some cases antiquated set of materials are comfortably located in printmakers studios, wherein they preform a kind of alchemy with copper, acid, ink, stone and gum. The results are an endlessly fascinating negotiation of ideas and techniques, with the purest result being a seamless embedding of thought in materials. The work that I selected resonated with an assured yet delicate balance of thought and process. I also looked for work that had truth in personal expression, sometimes refined, other times bold and clumsy but none-the-less original. There can be nothing clearer than the subjective nature of jurying an art exhibition. I am wiser for the opportunity to make the selections for this exhibition. What I saw over and over again in the submissions was a strong commitment to print, to a medium that is as variable and flexible as the human spirit. To place one’s work under the scrutiny of evaluation is a difficult act of true grit. The strength to preserver as artists comes from our determination to unabashedly share our ideas, perceptions, and opinions toward the goal of illuminating the richness of the human experience. I congratulate those selected and encourage all to continue seeking opportunities for exhibition. It is my most sincere hope that this exhibition pays fitting tribute to the great printmakers of this country and to the generosity of Shy Rabbit Contemporary Arts.
