Just Around the Corner: In 1953, nearly 10,000 people welcomed home Harry and Bess Truman at the old Missouri Pacific Railroad Depot on W. Pacific Avenue. When asked by reporters what the first thing he was going to do now that he was home, Harry responded, “Take the grips up to the attic” (“grips,” used to be a common synonym for “suitcases”). The station, originally built in 1913, is still used by Amtrak and has come to be known as the Truman Depot.
