BACKGROUND McAuliffe Invested In A Rhode Island Insurance Scam That Preyed On Dying People McAuliffe Invested In A Business Venture That Defrauded Insurers By Using The Stolen Identities Of Terminally Ill People. “Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe was one of dozens of investors with a Rhode Island estate planner charged with defrauding insurers by using the stolen identities of terminally ill people, according to court documents filed Wednesday by federal prosecutors in Providence.” (Fredrick Kunkle, “McAuliffe Among Investors In Rhode Island Insurance Scam That Preyed On Dying People,” The Washington Post, 10/10/13) McAuliffe Received $113,000 From A Rhode Island Annuity Associated With Caramadre And Caramadre Contributed $26,500 To McAuliffe’s 2009 Campaign The Federal Indictment Against Caramadre Indicates McAuliffe Received A Check From Midland Insurance Company For $113,057 From The Annuity Held With Donald Duarte. “According to his spokesman Josh Schwerin, McAuliffe invested $33,000 into the annuity system from which he received $80,000 back. Last week McAuliffe donated $47,000 to the American Cancer Society, the equivalent of the profit he made from the short term investment… The indictment filed against Caramadre indicates that McAuliffe (correctly listed as ‘T.M’ on page 57 of the indictment) received a check for $113,057.”
