Just Reminiscing While drinking my first cup of coffee this morning, I began to reminisce about the times of my childhood. How come we seem to want to remember the happy times rather than the sad times? To me I believe that storing those happy memories along with the ones you don’t want to remember, helps us to face the challenges of the future. So I’m going to recall some of my happy childhood memories. The first one I recall is the time my grandfather made me a pair of stilts, like the carnival performers would walk with.. Of course my stilts he made from two by fours. I found it hard to wait to try them out after school. Once I had mastered the art of walking with them it really was fun. Another memory was when my grandfather taught me how to use a coal shovel instead of a sled to ride down the mountain covered with snow in the winter time. Grabbing hold of the handle of the coal shovel and sitting down on the wide scoop my grandfather would give me a push and I would have the thrill of my life holding on to the handle of the shovel for dear life and praying I wouldn’t fall off. I can remember learning to make homemade taffy. The fun was pulling and stretching the taffy until it was firm. We would make long ropes of taffy and then cut it in pieces to eat after it set and cooled for a while. I can remember my brother and I could find more excuses to keep from getting in bed and going to sleep at night. I remember times we would make a tent out of our blankets and pretend we were camping out. Not easily fooled, our dad would make his presence known to let us know that we needed to turn out the lights and go to sleep. I remember in the summer time when school was out our parents had a hard time of getting my brother and I in the house before dark. We would roam the fields with our friends. I can remember how we would look for long vines hanging down from trees on one of the mountains we would climb. I remember testing a vine to make sure it would hold me and then swing out over the edge of the mountain and back. One time I misjudged the strength of a vine and just half way out over the edge of the mountain it broke sending me tumbling down the mountain side. I managed to grab hold of a small root protruding out of the mountain and stopped my decent to the bottom. My friends came running to see if I was okay. I was just a little bruised from the battering of the brush, but more embarrassed in front of my friends. Why is it when you have an accident that everyone seems so frighten for what may have happen to you, but then laugh at your carelessness after finding out you’re alright. Reminiscing about childhood as I grow older makes me feel young again and that is better than any medicine a doctor could prescribe. Till next time, take care. Rodney Smith
