Just a memory, for no particular reason... Of many hats I have worn in my 26 years in the U.S., one was working as a receptionist in a social service agency. The clients who would come to the agency were not always polite, and their demands were not always reasonable. It was not infrequent that a client would shout at a social worker. There was one social worker whom Ill never forget. Since I cant share her real name with the world, let me call her Esperanza. Here is Esperanza, explaining her simple philosophy in her own words: When they start shouting, I lower my voice. The louder they shout, the softer I speak, until I come to almost a whisper. It might puzzle, and even irritate them at times, but at the end, it never fails to calm the tempers down. Then, we can have a discussion... Ill be forever grateful to Esperanza for this life lesson.
