Just a quick heads-up. We are hosting an Ideas Marketplace this Saturday (Cole Harbour Place, 10 AM – Noon). We are going work with four project ideas that have been submitted by people in our network (see below). The session is designed to be a collaborative forum for connecting, building on ideas and supporting each other. We welcome all interested Engagers coming to contribute to the conversation so that projects can be tested and improved. The four projects will be: 1. ArtPreneurs 3.0 Presenter: Ryan Veltmeyer Youth Art Connection (YAC), a newly registered Nova Scotia charity, is set to launch ArtPreneurs 3.0 in 2015. The project aims to support young Nova Scotians to develop the networks, business skills, seed funding and opportunities they need to turn their creative ideas into Nova Scotia-based business or career plans. Youth from diverse backgrounds (African Nova Scotians, Aboriginal Youth, New Comers and European Nova Scotians aged 16-25) will be connected to professional artists, business mentors and organizations/agencies that support development projects in their fields. They will also be provided with micro seed funding and high profile opportunities to present their creative product/services so that the project will allow the ArtPreneurs will make money doing what they love, stay in Nova Scotia and most importantly, learned how to make something out of nothing. 2. Old School Hub Presenter: Laurie Cook The Old School Community Gathering Place seeks to provide a space for community ideas to generate and grow. The vision is to create a place for community members to engage with each other, government and business to develop new stories and new possibilities. They are looking to connect with other potential community hubs and community development projects to learn and share with them. 3. Deliberately Engaging and Welcoming Community Presenter: Beth Earle The idea is to start a think tank to talk about ways to deliberately engage diverse members of the Digby community. Whether it is seniors, youth, new business operators, immigrants or people from other areas, communities often do a poor job of engaging these groups and may inadvertently alienate them. This project is about reversing this trend by taking deliberate steps to involve and engage these diverse groups as members of our communities. Participants will include community development-oriented organizations such as municipal government and the YMCA, as well as youth, seniors, immigrants, board of trade members and local business people. 4. Why Do People See Diversity As A Negative? Presenter: Bob Lutes The idea is to create a survey that will enable us to better understand the issues that underlie discrimination, and assist us in moving toward a more inclusive and understanding society. The first step will be to speak with those dealing with discrimination on a daily basis to get a clearer view of the key issues. Next, survey questions will designed and data collected. Finally we will be able to make recommendations on how we might, as a society, move to be more inclusive and understanding. Cool stuff, right? Please drop us a note to RSVP at [email protected] if you are enticed to spend Saturday morning in the company of friends dreaming up ways to make their communities better. And for parents out there, childcare is being provided on site, just let us know so we can keep track of the numbers. Cheers, The Engage Nova Scotia Team
