Just a theory, but maybe, just maybe, the movies arent all that compelling? The native audience rolls out the first weekend and then the movie isnt good enough for them to rave about, so theres no follow-on business from the first weekenders friends and families. Because that seems to me whats going on here... I used to write comic books and over 40% of my Facebook connections are fans and comics professionals... and the first week after that new Spider-Man sequel opened, not a single one of my Facebook peeps posted anything to their timeline about that movie. Not one. So I made the decision that I was busy and if no one was raving about it, it probably wasnt worth my time. As opposed to the last Captain America movie which my feed would not stop cheering about and so I made sure to go see it in theaters and enjoyed the hell out of it, and then raved about it here. So instead of some major shift in audience habits, maybe what we are seeing here are a few weaksauce films without much in the way of buzz from people who saw it.
