Just a true military story to share with all my friends. I was stationed at Danang, Vietnam in 1971 when we had a consultant from Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii come in for a 2 day TDY (temporary duty) visit to straighten out some kind of snafu. He was a master sergeant and had never been in a combat zone. I was assigned to take care of him. This guy was scared to death and told me that if I took good care of him and got him back on the plane out of there, he would make sure I got the best ever R+R to Hawaii. We got hit the first night and I made sure he kept his head down. The next day we were inundated by a super typhoon and this guy and I spent three days in a wet sandy hole where I dutifully made sure he had rations and the like for those 120 mile an hour winds. After all was said and done, I got him back on an aircraft safe and sound and sent him back to Hawaii. He hugged me and shook my hand profusely and thanked me for seeing him through all that. I never heard from him again, but I would have taken care of him even without his promise of a beautiful R+R. Stan Hitchcock reminded me of those typhoons!
