Just about 2 months away! What is Schützenfest? Legend tells us that many centuries ago in a small village of Germany; an eagle viciously attacked a small child. An alert Schütze (archer or marksman) killed the eagle and saved the life of the child. The grateful townspeople praised him for his skill as a sharpshooter and looked upon him as a special hero and treated him almost like a king. Each year the event was commemorated by marksmen targeting a wooden eagle. Schützenfest, in the Greater Cincinnati Area, is a traditional festival of the Catholic Kolping Society. A hand-carved wooden eagle, perched high on a pole, is used as a target for the marksmen. The marksman to shoot down the last piece of the eagle has the honor of being proclaimed “Schützen König”, or Shooting King, for the year.
