Just as many residents of the Faroe Islands accept (then dispose of) toxic/contaminated whale meat because of tradition and/or peer pressure, in their community, many governmental and educational organizations in San Diego accept and promote the benefits of Sea Worlds captive orcas without looking at the price paid by these intelligent marine mammals and their trainers. Educating elected officials and public agency boards about the capture, abuse and killing of orcas, dolphins, pilot whales and other marine mammals around the world is an important step in ending the practices that many of us find so abhorrent and inhumane. The City Council relies on Sea World gate receipts to balance their budget; local school districts accept their free passes for students and schedule special events and field trips to the park; the Convention and Visitors Bureau promotes the park to visitors and features photos of the park on its home page (see sandiego.org). Note: these are public agencies, supported by public tax dollars. If you dont want your representatives to support, accept gifts, and/or rely upon revenues from an organization that promotes the inhumane treatment of orcas, its time to tell the City Council, School Board and Convention & Visitors Bureau.
