Just as someone who has a loved one suffering from dementia holds on for dear life to those rare moments of lucidity when that loved ones eyes light up with recognition and familiarity, so do mothers of teenagers hold on to the same brief moment of seeing the child they once knew reappear with the same sweetness and wonder as when they were children. Sadly, just like dealing with dementia, those moments are fleeting. Just as suddenly as they come, they go away and the wall of teen angst returns. Parents, who have gone before, promise that the wall will come down, eventually. So in that regard, there is far more hope than for those suffering from dementia. Nevertheless, while in the midst of either one, the heaviness in a persons mind and heart is almost unbearable as the person you knew seems to be disappearing before your very eyes.
