Just came back from a pre-wide release showing of Interstellar. - TopicsExpress

Just came back from a pre-wide release showing of Interstellar. First off, it was amazing to have the movie start right on time without any previews, warnings, messages, etc. Id never seen that before. The film itself was amazing, albeit striking the emotional chords a bit too much at times. Chris Nolan, once again being a pioneer, demonstrated beautifully that a sci-fi film did not have to stray from real science to be thrilling and captivating. Id never seen general relativity used as a plot vehicle before. As with Inception, I really appreciated Nolans not underestimating a blockbuster audience, but exploring a subject in all of its complexity and, in this case, actually offering scientific explanations in a positively entertaining way. Nearly all the science and engineering in the film was accurate or theoretically feasible. Even the parts where creative liberties were taken, a plausible explanation grounded in actual science existed. Youll see it all - wormholes, exoplanets, multiple dimensions, black holes, time dilation as a result of extreme gravity, time represented as a spatial dimension (that one is a doozie), temporal causality loops/paradoxes etc. I mean this is a blockbuster that has at its crux the issue of unifying quantum theory with general relativity, with an all-star cast playing scientists picking apart fundamental questions of science, philosophy and humankinds nature all while connecting with the audience on a very basic emotional level and offering some grade-A visuals, action and popcorn entertainment. Only Chris Nolan can do that. The film exists at the theoretical frontier of physics and youll be doing a lot of thinking after. But thats regardless of whether you are a geek/care about these things at all, because the film carries its own weight and entertains on a basic level, despite the complex science involved. My only peeve was that it tried to pay tribute to 2001 a bit too much, rather than being all Nolan. But it is a masterpiece nevertheless. Highly recommended, and do not even think about not seeing it in IMAX.
