Just came in from the cold and that reminded me of yet another Wasp CVS 18 experience. We were in the yards and steam had been secured to the 02 level where our berthing was. So, we had the open hanger deck below our feet, and the flight deck above, and a passage way that seemed to always have a gale blowing down it because folks would leave the exterior doors open. To top it off, our berthing compartments only had a curtain between us and that passage way. To say say it was cold was an extreme understatement. I would wear flight deck long johns, two or three pairs of socks, a winter working set of blues, would be inside a fart sack (mattress cover), had my watch cap on, and all my jackets piled on top of all that. I would still be cold. What would tick me off was my shipmate Ski would be sleeping comfortably in his rack, and half the time he would have his butt sticking out from the covers with is bare back exposed. Anyway, during a few extreme nights I went down to the photo lab which was also without heat. I would drag out a folding cot we had there and put it under the paper print dryer and turn that on. Now this dryer had a cloth belt that went around a large heated polished drum. Wet prints were put on the apron of the cloth belt and they then slowly went around the drum, dried and dropped off. I would slip under that machine with the belt passing an inch or so above me and go to sleep. Damn but the Boston Harbor could get cold.
