Just completed my fan consultation with the club in relation to the use of the Y Word.... I have Jewish blood and my father used to tell me stories of the abuse he used to get as a boy, not only as a Jew but throughout his time living in Tottenham, playing for the schoolboy team and as he grew older and continued attending first team matches, he had not been to WHL for many years although I regularly attend and he always said he understood the use of the word by our fans but was not comfortable with it, and personally hated the word, after attending recently with myself he walked out and commented with a huge smile on his face on how proud he was to be Jewish, and how good it felt to have thousands of people standing side by side with him in unity not hurling it as abuse but as a sign of acceptance, solidarity and defence, the ironic thing is, he said some of the idiots who used to abuse me as a kid for being Jewish are bound to be here chanting with us My fathers thoughts echo mine and I am also proud to use the word, as I am that one of my closest friends, who happens to be a black Zimbabwean once referred to me as his Nigga, and commented you aint black but your still my nigga a statement of strong endearment, however if someone walked past us in the street and called him a nigga, the situation would be very different, why is it different you may ask, because of the context and the intention of its use, for example would a police officer overhearing the mother of a naughty child in a supermarket telling her friend hes being a nightmare I could throttle him arrest her for the offence of threats to kill her child? I think not because that officer we would sincerely hope would calculate the context in which the term is being used, the FA, Met Police, the club and all involved need to do the same here as has been suggested by many including PM David Cameron when commenting recently on this matter and reminding any in doubt of the use of the word to look up the term Mens-Rea. Can I suggest we supply Mr Baddiel a complimentary seat in the away section for all Chelsea and West Ham fixtures going forward, he may then realise that the hissing of gas chambers, songs about concentration camps, showers and Hitler bellowing around him are the real issue here and what he really needs to be campaigning to stamp out and can in no way have their context questioned! He may then realise that he is barking up the wrong tree, it might also be worth requesting he makes sure he doesnt arrive with his face painted black, as he did when impersonating Jason Lee on national TV however as Im convinced this would cause more offence walking down Tottenham High Road than a group of Spurs fans singing Yid Army. Thank you for the oppurtunity to air my opinion on this matter COYS......... YIDS!!! ;)
