Just delivered my speech at a forum on Domestic Violence against Women and Children by MyWOMEN & Womens Forum Malaysia. On 20th Jan, a man brutally cut his wife’s face after she defied his order not to visit her mother. 9th Feb, a woman died after she was believed to be slashed by her husband after an argument. 4th March, a man beat then set his wife on fire because he suspected she had an affair. 6th April, a husband beat his wife with a belt because she questioned him about the missing money from her handbag. 3rd May, a wife and her daughter were locked in a house for nine hours by her angry husband. Domestic violence against women and children is serious and pernicious. It ruins lives, breaks up families and has a lasting impact. It is criminal. It is one of the greatest threats to lasting peace and development. I think we can all agree that the time for complacency is long gone, has passed and belongs to another era. The silence on violence against women must be broken and its time for action to end domestic violence against women and children. MyWomen is calling for a stand-alone goal on gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment and separately and concurrently gender equality mainstreamed across all goals. This is needed to address the structural foundations of gender-based inequality. To this effect, we are calling for a new framework to tackle three core areas: safety, access and voice, so women can live free of violence, enjoy equal access of opportunities and resources and exercise their voice in leadership and participation. We seek your support to ensure a strong focus on gender equality, women’s rights and empowerment and ending violence. All of us at MyWOMEN look forward to strengthened collaboration with you through this forum to end violence against women and children. Thank you. Dato G
