Just finished Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Its very different from the LoZ games Ive played before (Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword). Its very non-linear, which makes it more of a throwback to the original game. You can go to whichever dungeon you want, explore the entire map, and get your equipment in whatever order you want. Because of that, the story is loosely there because you can go around as long as you want before you get anything done. The wall fusion mechanic is also difficult and brilliant. There is a lot of emphasis on puzzles rather than the fighting itself. Fighting consists of swinging the sword unless youre against a boss. Most of the game is puzzles, whether its navigating the terrain or going through the dungeons. And the wall walking ability makes you consider alternate routes and fighting techniques, something the other Zelda games didnt really have. The game really does take full advantage of it. The dungeons are still item based and you will still NEED a specific item to beat it. But you can still use a variety of items to get through. Dungeons will take long to complete because it might take a while to unlock all of the doors, get all of the items, and figure out the path to the boss. However, the half-way point produces a portal where you can go back to the beginning to save and go back to where you left off later. Lorule was great. Its basically a chaotic version of Hyrule that lost the protection of the gods. Hilda is also pretty cool too. The first time you see her she traps away the FINAL BOSS OF THE GAME. Shes basically a very powerful sorceress in charge of an unconnected and destroyed kingdom. And you really do feel bad for her and the people, especially considering how much of a difficulty spike occurs when going from one world to the other. The monsters in Lorule are much more powerful and navigation is tougher because the land itself is broken into fragments. The only thing I didnt like was the naming. Really? Hy-rule and Lo-rule? Could you be more obvious? The ending....there are two twists. One of which I kind of expected and what happens leads up to it. The other comes the hell out of nowhere and is more of a deus ex machina to wrap things up neatly with the villain. I can kind of justify it thinking back but theres still a plot hole in there I think. That said, the ending as a whole was very sad and beautiful. So yeah, great game. I loved exploring and puzzling through it. Loved the world design. I dont think it was necessarily easier than other games and the hinting isnt nearly as bad and obvious as Skyward Sword. There is a system in place for traversing the world quickly very early on and there are plenty of save points in key locations. So yeah, solid game. Play it if you love Legend of Zelda.
