Just finished "The Best of Intentions" by Irwin Unger. A book - TopicsExpress

Just finished "The Best of Intentions" by Irwin Unger. A book summarizing and analyzing the origins, implementation, triumphs and tragedies of Great Society social policies under Kennedy, LBJ, and Nixon. The book was captivating, despite the pro-LBJ bias. What I liked is that it really focused on the mid and high level administrators that carried out these policies rather than the president entirely. Most importantly, this book solidified my choice of LBJ as favorite president. Even though I am a political realist and even pessimist, I cannot help but completely admire all that LBJ tried to accomplish, even though most of it ended up failing. Social issues and education are what I care about and arguably what LBJ most cared about too. Vietnam was shitty, but what LBJ started in motion was priceless.
