Just finished an awesome week-long materials science class at UW-Madison for middle school and high school teachers. Got great ideas for labs, demos, challenges, explanations, websites, and video clips related to metals, glass, ceramics, polymers, and composites. We got to do so many hands-on activities, crafts, art projects, etc. using science. I used a propane blow torch, melted tin and other metals, blew glass, made epoxy resins in molds, made a styrofoam mold, shrinkydinks, and used a kiln to make raku pottery (metallic paint). Top quality teachers (high school chemistry and tech ed) and many fun classmates made for an excellent week. I would encourage any middle school or high school science, tech ed, or engineering teachers take this class when one comes to your area. Lots of free stuff too.
