Just got forced into the new facebook messenger app. As I suspected it is another effort by FB to vendor lock you into their services. It wanted access to the contacts on my phone so I would have the convenience of using the FB messenger app for text messaging. It also wanted my phone number, they werent clear on why, I am sure it was for some other obtrusive hook into my life. Sure you can say no, most wont, and I am sure it will keep prompting me until I say yes. The thing that annoys me about FB is that once you put all of this information in their hands how do you get it out. For example we have all of these contacts in FB, say you want to send a real letter to them or an email that doesnt go through FB, FB makes it very difficult for you to get your contact information out. The only way I have found is this cludgy way through Yahoo, which I am sure they will lock out when they realize it. Say what you want about Google, in their system your data is your to do with as you please.
