We have had white pelicans congregate on the Minnesota River in Granite Falls for many years. this year we have many more than ever before. I had great fun telling my grandchildren that they are dam pelicans, as they gather by the dam. Sam can hardly wait to tell someone about the dam pelicans and report that it was what his grandma said. I figure I might as well teach them one of my favorite poems, too. Dixon Lanier Merritt, editor of The Tennessean, wrote: A wonderful bird is the pelican. His bill can hold more than his belican. He can hold in his beak Enough food for a week, But I’m damned if I see how the helican.
