Just got off the phone with my drumming mentor, friend, uncle, Alvin Fielder after not really talking to him for a little over a year. Hes 79 and sounding like hes doing better than ever. He said in the last year hes worked with Ken Vandermark, Matthew Shipp, Damon Smith, Dave Dove, Jason Jackson, Kidd Jordan, Oliver Lake, Joshua Abrams and some other heavy weights. Without this mans influence in my life I may not be as serious about playing music as I am. Not only has he played with Sun Ra, The Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble, Fred Anderson, Muhal Richard Abrams and countless other masters, but he also studied with Billy Higgins, Ed Blackwell, and Tony Williams.
