Just got word from Fr Val Dimoc that iconic priest Fr Pat Guyguyon from Kiangan died just a few hours ago. He was among the first ifugao to become a priest, I think second only to Bishop Madangeng of Hungduan. He was very political and had progressive views. I dont know if he espoused the Theology of Liberation but when I was in college in my activist days, I heard he and Bishop Claver were radicals. I remember when I was the governor and we had a misunderstanding with then Congressman Sol Chungalao during our first term, it was Fr Pat who offered to broker a conciliation in his parish residence in Lamut. Of course, we had inlaggim and his whiskey as peace offerings. And so it was under Fr Pats effervescent and flawless Cordilleran English did he ask us point blank if we were planning to run against each other in d next elections (2004). I said I wasnt running for congressman and was happy sitting as gov. Cong Chungalao also expressed his intentions on staying as Cong. Then, Fr Pat says, its settled. Go shake hands. That peace wouldnt be broken until at least after a decade. Tnx Fr Pat for your wisdom and leadership.
