Just in from James Halliday......Great recognition that the Granite Belt has been producing great wine for decades..... The Granite Belt region in Queensland has been producing some excellent wines by any standards for the past 20 or more years. In the 2014 Wine Companion there will be three five-star wineries (including Boirean, one of the Top 100 Australian wineries), and five four-star wineries – this despite the rain-soaked 2011 vintage. Thus visitors with serious knowledge of wine will have plenty of options. Moreover, there is a kaleidoscope array of varieties in commercial production; these were the focus of the ‘Strange Bird’ regional wine promotion put together some years ago. The key to the region lies in its altitude of between 600m and 1000m. I still remember the shock of snow falling on me during my last visit in January a few years back. In all, there are 45 wineries in the Granite Belt. James Halliday
