Just listening to Hack on Triple J and just cant get past the juxtaposition of these two stories. The first, the tragic death of cricketer Phillip Hughes and the second the culture of drug use at schoolies. Though Im not really familiar with Phil, from all reports he seems to have been a fit, focused, determined and humble young man. And now hes gone, struck down at the age of 25, in a place where he would have felt safe, secure and loved - on the cricket pitch, a place where he undoubtedly demonstrated great talent and would have garnered so much joy and achievement over the past two decades. An absolute tragedy in every sense of the word. And then we have these schoolies, whose only objective for this week is to get fu&@ed up. It makes me sad and angry and sick to my stomach at the absolute lack of respect some people have for themselves and their body and mind, and the absolute gift of their lives. If only they really understood how quickly it all be taken away. RIP Phil Hughes.
