Just read a post where the Templeton Livestock Yard sold after fifty years in business and the last sale will be October 4th - New Housing Tract going in - This poem seems appropriate -- BEFORE ANOTHER COWBOY BITES THE DUST - Cowboys are a dwindlin’ breed We all know this to be true As the cattle herds are whittled To just a remaining few On some ranches that remain Cowboy ways take a back seat They are like cattle factories Where cows turn grass to meat Many ranches don’t allow a rope To be used on their cattle As motor bikes and four wheelers Try to replace the horse and saddle Cowboy clones are popping up Like mushrooms with the rain Of those who truly live the life Very few now still remain Where cattle once were king New housing tracts are grown Where grass grew green and lush New homes are being shown The corral that stood by the oak On that sea of soft green grass Is now a Beacon station Selling sodas, beer and gas The old sale yards are shut down And the slaughter houses too Those few that still remain Are on the hit list too On the coast of California Where ranches were so fine Rows of grapes now are grown To feed our thirst for wine In the flatlands of the valley Where cattle ranches stood The cost of getting water Has ended them for good In the beautiful Sierras There is little doubt The government regulations Are pushing cow herds out On the deserts of Nevada Where cattle were the way Are fenced out by red tape The cowman’s lost his say The cattle range is receding Like glaciers in the sun The cowboy life is waning His work is nearly done Rodeos and roundups Are on the endangered list From the slander and the lies Of the animal activists A way of life is slipping As the old ones die away Who will we look up to When the last cowboys gone away Our beef’s from Argentina Our pickups from Japan Our spurs from South Korea What’s wrong with our own land When the last cowboy is buried And the cities consume the range The America we loved and knew Will seem so cold and strange So let us all do our part To prevent the greed and lust That’s killing off the cowboy’s Before another one bites the dust Gary Gragnani
