Just read an interesting article about implicit racism in John - TopicsExpress

Just read an interesting article about implicit racism in John Hughes films; I have enjoyed most of them and many do provide good yuks and good social commentary either on youth caste systems or job related castes. Yet it is true that his films are entirely about white culture. Perhaps thats just saying he did what he knows like Woody Allen doing films about NYC Jewish culture or Garrison Keillor about Minnesota Lutherans (also both pretty fair skinned subcultures). And Spike Lee films mostly feature urban black culture. Again successful producers do what they know. The one thing the article did point out that was troubling however is the Donger character in the beloved classic 16 Candles. I dont know many people of Asian heritage but I never had thought previously about how this character is presented in a rather racist stereotype. I laughed as I saw the film at Dongers antics. I am curious to know. Have any of you who have seen the film considered this stereotype problem before or if you are Asian or have Asian friends what feelings did this character bring about for you/ them if you dont mind sharing. Thank you for your time.
