Just reading about some of the dumb things the Navy does to put on a good face. My first experience with that was on the Wasp CVS-18. We had been sailing in the North Atlantic and were taking on black oil. For those of you not familiar with the stuff, imagine the blackest, dirtiest, stinky crank case oil you have ever seen drained out of a car, then double that. Anyway, we were taking on the oil and some kind of fitting broke in the hanger bay. In seconds the bay had an inch or so of oil on it, and it ran over and down both sides of the ship, and with the waves breaking on the hull quickly made one hell of a mess. The problem was, we were to pull into NYC in a couple of days so the whole crew that was not on watch first cleaned up the hanger. Then as we got to calmer waters the crew started hanging over the side painting on haze gray paint anyplace that was messed up, right over the oil. We pulled into NYC and the ship looked pretty good for the visit, but as soon as we got back into the Atlantic after departure that paint just slid off the hull. Not pretty.
