Just realized we never gave an update to the milk carton recycling - TopicsExpress

Just realized we never gave an update to the milk carton recycling kickoff at Indian Landing the week of Nov 11th. We had two to three parent volunteers present during the week to assist the kids with the recycling process. From the parent volunteer perspective, it went very well from day one. The kids easily picked up what to do and many started to inquire if there was more they could recycle such as plastic juice cups or yogurt containers. The milk carton recycling process involves removing the straw for trash (if the student used one), dumping any remaining milk into a large bin, and putting the empty milk carton in a designated recycling bin. Students are also able to recycle juice boxes, water bottles, and Gatorade-type bottles in the milk carton recycling bin. Each day, the students are recycling about 10 lbs worth of milk carton recyclables. The students learned that recycled milk cartons are used to make many paper products such as tissue paper, paper towels, and toilet paper. Many thanks to the IL Custodian, Dave Cox, for getting the recycling station set-up and operating! To celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15th, the Wellness and Environment (WE) Team announced a straw challenge to the students - asking them to consider if they need to use a straw for their milk carton or juice cup.
