Just received this from a Fan! I received an email update from my Congressional Representative last month concerning the (partial) Federal Government shutdown. What follows is the body that email and my response. ------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Friend, The federal government shut-down is now underway and it defies common sense. I voted against the government shut-down bill late Saturday night, and I am very frustrated with the lack of action in Washington, DC right now. I held out hope that House leadership would put forward a non-political resolution that would have funded necessary services like Head Start, medical research and veterans’ disability benefits for the next few weeks. Unfortunately, a few unreasonable members of Congress are determined to hold the entire federal government hostage with a list of political demands. In Southern Illinois, we know that people are more important than politics. A few days ago, I spoke in the House of Representatives about the need to stop playing games and fund basic services such as Social Security and Veterans benefits in case of a government shut-down. You can watch my remarks here: I want to resolve this needless shut-down, and I stand ready to work with reasonable lawmakers of both parties to ensure that it ends as quickly as possible. Common sense demands it. Sincerely, Bill Enyart Member of Congress ---------------------------------------------------------------- My response ... Mr. Enyart, Please do not attempt to feed me with the same swill that you expect the rest of the zombies to gulp with such gusto. The shut down was a direct result of the same political tripe that you claimed in this email to decry. It was because the President and his loyal minions refused to delay for an instant the absolute travesty and gutting of what America was designed to be that is the so-called Affordable Care Act which is neither affordable nor caring. The same delay that many of these same minions are clamoring for now that the primary face of the act (the web site) has failed more than miserably I might add. You stress the idea of common sense many times in your communique. This very act both defies common sense and illustrates that you have a grasp of it most abysmal by any reasonable standard applied. I do give you points for possessing the rare ability to do both simultaneously and with such ease of execution. Unlike many Americans, I DO know exactly what the failure of the ACA Website means as I am an accomplished software developer with a substantial amount of experience with web technology. It shows a complete lack of planning and organization the likes of which would literally empty top tiers of organizational charts of any business unit involved in any way with such a failure. The price tag alone is truly mind boggling. To even contemplate paying an initial sum of tens of millions of dollars and then allowing that figure to reach over 600 million dollars is absolutely ludicrous on a literally epic scale. It would be highly amusing were it not my tax money. That being the case, it almost makes me physically ill to contemplate. Really, Sir, a web site is nowhere nearly so complex that it takes those levels of resources to run through the entire product life cycle a hundred times over. It really does make any rational person seriously wonder what other gargantuan failures await with other parts of this very complex legislation and its implementation. With a law whose text is quite literally longer than Leo Tolstoys War and Peace in the original Russian, mistakes and misunderstandings are all but guaranteed. These are but a small sampling of the errors that I personally foresaw even before the Bill became Law. That is merely the execution of this grand plan. My primary issue lies with the meat of the Law and the entire approach. This behemoth touches every aspect of American life and freedom. The entire thing makes my blood boil and weep almost daily for the nation that I proudly served in my youth as a member of Americas Guard of Honor. I learned many lessons in personal Honor and rubber meets the road reality. This thing passes no analysis what seeks a positive outcome under any of those terms. Sir, I beg you as a human and heartily demand as a proud American devoted to personal freedoms and liberty to stop the political spin, stop the outright lies, and finally to turn your support against this horrible abuse of the American People. If you have a shred of love for and faith in those that you serve at the leisure of as well as a mere shred of personal integrity, you will defy your party bosses and take a real and substantive stand against this evil monstrosity given form in secret, pushed roughshod on the face of this great Republic, and set to devour its wealth of treasure and innovation as it grinds the People under its foul gait.
