Just revisited Maurice Pialats Palme dOr winning film Under the Sun of Satan (1987). The first time I saw it, I knew that I would need to see it again to take in everything. A little over a month later, this film really clicked with me. Having an idea of where it was going, I could piece together the subtle connections and identify instances of foreshadowing that are sprinkled throughout this masterwork. On one level, its an intricately designed tale of faith and suffering in a sinful world. On another level, its a case-study on visual simplicity and the impact of cutting from one shot to another.
