Just saw The Butler. Great film to spark reflection on the question of race in America. I am also working my way through a book which has been keeping up at night. It is hard to sleep. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by legal scholar Michelle Alexander, asserts that we have effectively created a new caste system for black men who are incarcerated for minor drug offenses at a rate which is vastly higher than for whites committing the same offense. A felony for a minor drug offense can mark you for life and deny you access to a job, housing, and the right to vote even after you have served your time or completed the terms of a plea deal. If you have found yourself lulled into thinking that we live in a post racial society and that Jim Crow like laws are behind us, this book will shake you out of your complacency. Here are the video clips from an interview with Michelle Alexander on Democracy Now democracynow.org/2010/3/11/legal_scholar_michelle_alexander_on_the I thank my son, Alex, for bringing this book to my attention.
