Just saw another friend whose child is currently on antibiotics. Hopefully, her doctor was confident of a bacterial cause, but in the midst of this flu epidemic, I feel the responsibility to get as much information to my friends as possible, and hope they will use it and pass it on. If you or your child are prescribed antibiotics, please ASK THE DOCTOR IF THEY ARE NECESSARY. Ask him what the diagnosis is, and if there is a chance it could be viral, if it is safe to simply treat the symptoms for a few more days rather than start antibiotics right away. Most illnesses will go away on their own in those few days. I dont think its fair that parents arent given enough information about childhood illnesses. Doctors (and PAs) simply dont have the time to educate their patients and families on their diagnoses, and often tend to write a prescription for an antibiotic because it is faster than explaining what is really going on. So I will continue to post websites that can help educate parents (and non-parents, for that matter) on common illnesses, so that they can be more confident in caring for their kids when theyre sick. If youre tired of these posts, please unfollow/ unfriend me. It probably means we havent spoken in the past four years anyway, since this has been my #1 soapbox for at least that long.
