Just saw the most remarkable film: Solomon Kane, directed by Michael Bassett and starring James Purefoy -as the hero created by Robert E. Howard. Just a truly grand film in every respect! I stumbled on it really after a day of reading Robert E. Howard, and just after ordering the Solomon Kane stories for further reading. The movie is superb --- infinitely more coherent, profound and satisfying -- and beautifully done -- than many a fantasy film like it; a real jewel. Purefoy, as always, was marvelous giving the hero a gravitas that a lesser actor might not have been able to deliver, even with the terrific script and the terrific direction by Bassett. I cannot quite understand why I have not heard about this film before now. I highly recommend it. (Thanks again to the person of the page who recommended that I read Robert E. Howard. Wow. )
