Just sharing a post by Shoreline Cinema Waikanae about the truly inspirational film, Aunty and the Star People, currently showing there. Jean Aunty says, “I was a tourist, I never intended any of this…I think it was my karma,” That was 30 years ago and ever since, Wellington’s ‘Jean Aunty’ has been changing the fortunes of the poorest of children of Tamil Nadu, on the rural plains of Southern India. Jean has battled every obstacle to develop and grow an ‘Illam’ -a children’s home. The lives of thousands have been changed. “When you do this type of work, everything else seems empty.” Back in Berhampore, Wellington, Jean remembers her youthful and outsider life. Her partnership with Barry Crump, being a Mum, her career as a writer. In Tamil Nadu, the orphaned children, the fruits of Jean’s work, challenge our assumptions of India. We meet optimism, wisdom and excitement. We see the wonderful results that education brings to the poorest of the poor. These children represent the revolution that is India today. youtube/watch?v=4m3Ka7XZ_9k&feature=youtu.be
