Just to be clear to all of my 412 FB Friends - I am NOT judging anyone who did, or intends to do, the ice bucket challenge. I am PRO charity, and I am PRO awareness. I am even PRO fun. I DID donate to ALS. But I also feel strongly that we all teach by example. By doing the challenge, or donating, or both, we want to teach our students and our children that it is good to give. It is also a very good thing when we show understanding and compassion for others. It is an equally good thing when the others include people who, as victims of natural disasters like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, or earthquakes, would give anything to have a bucket of clean water for bathing, drinking, cooking, or washing clothes. It is also a very good thing to teach that the others include people who live all around the world in circumstances so horrible that fresh, clean water is as valuable as blood. These same people have to send their children out to walk miles to get water, every day. Many of those children die from lack of something that is in abundance where you and I live. I donated that small amount to unicefusa and posted about the enormous amount of water being used by literally millions of people in the ice bucket challenge because I feel guilty that, even after chuckling over hundreds of videos over the past few weeks, I didnt recall sooner that so many other people live without enough water. I became AWARE that I have slipped into living a comfortable life and taking my blessings for granted. I spent most of last night imagining how sick I would feel if I were one of those people yearning for water - only to see or hear that people in the richest country in the world are pouring it on their heads...even with the best intentions. So, if anything, Im judging myself and confessing that I let myself forget about others, if just for a little while. I posted earlier to spread that new-found AWARENESS and give information about an affordable way to donate to ANOTHER worthy cause. I shall now return my FB posts to projects and fun.
