Just to put things in perspective, the number of Nigerian high school girls kidnapped a few weeks ago by Boko Haram is nearly equal to the number of students in Mankato West High Schools 2011 graduating class. We got to walk across the stage, receive our diplomas, and celebrate our success. These girls are being sold into slavery and forced to marry their captors. If the identities were reversed and it was us whod been kidnapped, it would have been an international crisis wed have been home within days. So why arent they? This quote from the NYTs Nicholas Kristof pretty much sums up the issue: More than 200 teenage girls have just been enslaved because they had the brains and guts to seek to become teachers or doctors.
