Just walked into the office shivering (with my North Face on) and - TopicsExpress

Just walked into the office shivering (with my North Face on) and said to the security guard Holy COLD! His response: Oh, its beautiful! Ill take this over 3 trips overseas in 140 degree weather. And so fueled a discussion of his six years in the service, including 3 trips to Afghanistan/Iraq/Kuwait. It got me thinking. Life gets so busy, we tend to say things like I support our troops but do we actually ever take the time to imagine what a day is like for them overseas? No. Do we send them anything? No. We wait for that one day per year where we look for song lyrics and videos to post on Facebook, so we look like were doing something to benefit our troops. Another thing this gentleman said to me was, Id go back to Kuwait if I could. Life is so simple there. I immediately picked up on some sort of struggle he is dealing with here and also his appreciation for the smaller things in life. Then, I realize that he is in a position that pays maybe 13-15 dollars an hour. He is probably 12 years older than me and still much, much more experienced. WHEN are we going to start helping our troops? We spend so much time focusing on the things and people we want/need to protect, yet we fail to appreciate the ones actually providing the protection. We focus so much on the possibility of things happening within our communities, yet we give little to no attention to our servicemen and women putting their lives on the line daily. Im not insinuating that other political issues are of no importance, but why our servicemen and women are seemingly at the bottom of the spectrum of importance is beyond me. I HATE this. (end rant)
